Streaming the future of football coverage, says Manchester United's Ed Woodward


Manchester United’s executive vice-chairman has told club shareholders that the tempting financial rewards from a revamped Club World Cup show that online streaming of football will dominate in the future.

Ed Woodward said that the $12 billion (about £8.9 billion) offer to Fifa for a new 24-team Club World Cup, held every four years starting in 2021, could herald a new era in broadcasting rights for football.

United and Liverpool are in line to be among 12 European teams invited to take part in the inaugural tournament in June 2021, with the winner earning £100 million. Uefa, however, fears conflict with the Champions League, and is fighting the move.
