Everton to entertain African opposition at Goodison Park for first time

Everton will entertain African opposition at Goodison Park for the first time later this year – with the winners of the eight-team SportPesa Super Cup invited to face Everton in a friendly match.

The date of the fixture has still to be determined – it could be pre-season or during an international break – but follows Everton’s participation in the inaugural tournament in Tanzania last summer.

Kenyan champions Gor Mahia FC won last season’s competition and were rewarded with a clash against the Blues in the Tanzania National Stadium, Everton winning 2-1 with Wayne Rooney scoring his first goal since resigning for the club.

Gor Mahia will defend the SportPesa Super Cup in the second edition of the regional football club tournament in Nairobi from June 3 to 10.

A press conference in Nairobi today announced that eight teams will take part – four from Kenya, three from Tanzania and one from Zanzibar.

Besides the chance to take on the Toffees at Goodison Park the 2018 Super Cup champions will also take home USD30,000 (KSh3m) in prize money.

Gor Mahia FC, AFC Leopards SC, Kariobangi Sharks FC and Kakamega Homeboyz FC are the Kenyan sides invited.

Tanzanian giants, Yanga SC and Simba SC will be joined by compatriots Singida United FC with Jeshi la Kujenga Uchumi (JKU) from Zanzibar completing the line up.
