Liverpool are favourites to sign Porto defender Diogo Leite, according to reports.

Leite is yet to break into Porto’s first-team but the 19-year-old centre-back has impressed for the side’s B team this season and his performances have put the Premier League’s elite clubs on red alert.

There has been speculation in Portugal that Arsenal are ready to pay Leite’s £13million release clause and Manchester City have also registered an interest in the highly-rated youngster.

However, according to The Guardian, Liverpool are in pole position to land the teenager ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.

It’s claimed the Reds are keen on wrapping up a deal this summer and Leite will immediately be sent on loan for more regular game-time.

The teenager played as Porto’s Under-23 side defeated Arsenal 1-0 earlier this week and several scouts were in attendance at the Emirates.

Jurgen Klopp currently has Virgil van Dijk, Dejan Lovren, Ragnar Klavan, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez at his disposal in central defence.

Gomez, though, will miss the remainder of Liverpool’s season after undergoing ankle surgery.

‘Gutted to confirm that my season for both club and country is over having undergone successful ankle surgery,’ he confirmed.

‘Been a tough few weeks trying everything possible to be available on the pitch to help the team.

‘I’m going to do all I can to get back and be in the best possible shape for pre-season. The focus now is to support the team in the two biggest games of the season.’
