WASHINGTON—Trial proceedings kicked off within the Justice Division’s antitrust challenge to Penguin Random Home’s deliberate acquisition of rival writer Simon & Schuster, a check for the Biden administration’s efforts to restrict company consolidation.
“This proposed merger must be stopped,” Justice Division lawyer John Learn mentioned in his opening assertion Monday. “It would, in the defendants’ own words, cement Penguin Random House’s dominance.”
